Keeping it Simple // Which Road do we Choose?

We have many choices in life and some can be described as ‘the roads we choose to travel’, will we have this one or that one? Is it the way we are meant to go, or the way we choose to go? What happens when we take a pathway and it leads to upset or not achieving what we wanted? Do we actually call them the high, middle or low roads or a little decision or a big decision? A chance happening, the road less travelled. It could be a family tradition and we feel obliged to continue on the path or in that direction.

If you come to the fork in the road, take it

– Yogi Berra

Lewis Carroll, author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland wrote. “On day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. Which road do I take? she asked. Where do you want to go? was his response. I don’t know, Alice answered. Then, said the cat, it doesn’t matter”.

Understanding where we want to go in life fully supports our purpose and direction. If we don’t have a plan, a vision or a direction then how will we know which way to turn when we get opportunities or choices in life? When we don’t have focus we can feel as if we are simply drifting through life with no particular place to go, then one day we wake up and wonder where our life has gone.

We hear people say, “I fully trust and allow things to show up, or what will be, will be”. This does work for some people and the reason is, they have given careful consideration to what it is they want, getting crystal clear in their mind, and then letting it go. The magic ingredient however is doing the work towards obtaining it and this can be in the form of ongoing education, mentoring and coaching with the bigger picture in mind. Doing an apprenticeship, retraining or just doing whatever it takes because we know where we want to go. Attaching feelings to that vision is essential to the success of our moving forwards in life.

Right now, in this moment this is the youngest we will ever be! As we consider our life and how much longer we have to live (there are many online sites to calculate this), we could consider this thought, if tomorrow was our last day on earth, would we be happy with our life to date? Would we feel like we have lived our full life? We might consider time we have spent with those we love and treasure? Another great exercise is to consider what we would do or who we would share time with if given just 3 weeks to live. Would we do anything differently? This type of questioning will allow our life choices and options to open up.

Our life is our life and we are responsible for our choices. When we make what we might consider the wrong choice or take the other road instead of that road the most important thing is to learn from that mistake. It’s when we learn from our misfortunes, mistakes and mishaps that we truly grow. We can also ask ourselves, “Is there ever any mistakes?” Losses are there to wake us up and when we fully understand this we move forward with ease. An example is when someone gets retrenched and they are devastated, then a few months down the track, they are over the moon with enthusiasm and say, “it was the best thing that ever happened to me”. We might get a disappointing mark in our assessment, however, let’s learn from it and put some changes in place, study more or differently, seek the assistance of the teacher, lecturer, tutor or support group. We have the power to empower ourselves to live our life on purpose and with passion.
